About: The Maine Middle Passage Project has been working since 2024 to bring recognition to the only documented location in our state where enslaved people were brought ashore. Its part of a larger effort to acknowledge America's role in the slave trade, the 12 million Africans who lost their lives during the Middle Passage, those who were survived and the accomplishments of African Americans. There are 90 arrival sites along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts identified by researchers, and historical markers have been erected at a number of those locations including Boston, Providence, RI, and New London CT. The presentation will include information on Kittery's colonial past, the connection to Maines maritime history, and the coalition that is working together to develop a permanent memorial and a range of community events including a remembrance ceremony.
